Lump sum contracts for engineering services work traditionally pay a
substantial portion up front (10-25%), and the rest at various
milestones through the course of the project.

I ALWAYS structure my freelance contracts with money paid in
installments. I Depending on the size of the contract, I ask for:

15% upon award of contract

25% upon submission of first draft

25% upon submission of second draft

25% upon submission of final draft

10% upon submission of final deliverables

Never had a client object.
