Douglas S. Bailey asks:

>>Can the two beasts be networked together? Can you view a shared PC hard
drive from a Mac box? And vice versa? If I owned one and was going to add
the other, I'd want to know...<<

Yes, you can. DAVE (www.thursby.com) allows you to plug a Mac into a
Windows network and see and be seen on the network. DoubleTalk (can't
remember the company) is a cheaper alternative, more limited in scope but
also recommended for those who don't need all DAVE's features. You can
download an evaluation version of DAVE from Thursby; I don't know about
DoubleTalk. [Note: I have no commercial interests in any of the products
mentioned here].

You also have the option of getting a PC card (around $500) which you can
install on the larger desktop Macs (i.e. not iMacs, but one of the tower
models), which gives you a fully-fledged Pentium PC within your Mac that you
can switch to and from the Mac OS at any time. Or you can get VirtualPC
(www.connectix.com), which emulates a Pentium in software, and comes bundled
with a full copy of Windows (prices vary according to which version Windows
you choose, but all under $200). That's the solution I've chosen for my
kids' Mac at home, to allow them to play PC software (of the slower, gentler
kind: emulation means it's too slow for fast-action shoot-em-ups, but then
they don't play those anyway).

As the PC-Mac issue in general, suffice it to say that I've learned to live
with Windows' limitations in my recent assigments (just about), and that for
a new user, with the forced introduction of MacOS X on new Macs, it's a
different ballgame, and one which I would hesitate to enter at this stage.
OS X is not quite ready for prime time (if anyone is thinking of arguing
this point with me, please drop me a line - using Office 10), and though
you're given a copy of "classic" Mac OS as well (v9.2), many apps haven't
been updated for it as yet.

Good luck
