>Very simple answer: you EARN it.

That was wonderfully put. You earn it. I have had very few problems in
getting my team recognize the worth of a technical writer. Just take one
proposal, one technical document prepared by a developer. Transform it into
a decent piece of work, and you'll earn the endless respect of everyone in
the team.

Maybe I was just lucky! The developers had once sent a few documents to the
client who had lashed out at the poor quality of documentation practiced in
my previous organization. As a last minute fire-fighting effort, they
brought me to work on the documents, and after a lot of effort (seriously),
I managed to get it in shape.

The client was positively "hearty in approbation and lavish in praise." I
became an instant celebrity.

I am sure everyone gets a chance to show what they are worth...it is just
upto us to make the best of it, and show everyone where we stand, and where
we can add real value.

Cheers.

Have a nice day,

Regards
