Don't forget that lawyers are professional pessimists. You might be sued, and maybe it's even happened once or twice. However, the odds of it happening must be fairly slim, unless whatever you are documenting is an inherrently dangerous product.

You might make best use of your time by checking the language in your contract. If you're a contractor, you may have more control over that than a salaried employee. However, I don't see how being a contractor makes you more liable than a full-time employee. The main difference is the duration of your contract, and I don't see how that's relevant to liability.

The question of tech-writer liability seems analogous to the concerns that first-time fiction writers have about an editor stealing their manuscript or ideas. Yes, it might happen, and maybe even has, but I'd be far more concerned about people running red lights.
