marianne -dot- patten -at- abnamro -dot- com wonders if it's ethical to send a copy of a user
manual she wrote for one client to a friend who works in a completely different
field (industry and client base, I assume). She notes that she was the writer
of the document, but that it clearly belongs to her client. She further wonders
what she can use of work she has done in any portfolio.

Go back to your client and ask what, if anything, you can use from the work you
did for them in any portfolio you put together. As you point out, they own the
documentation. Many employers and clients are willing to allow limited excerpts
for portfolio purposes, but in my experience--which is not a statistical
universe--an equal number of employers will say No. Legally, you need to go
with whatever your client/employers allow.
