Perception, Sarah, perception. The people who think documentation is a step down haven't a clue, most of the time, what it is we do. I worked one gig, the writers reported to the head of training. We were definitely a lower species of being in that twit's eyes (she had a Ph.D., but she was a flipping idiot). She did not understand what we did, did not want to understand, there was no explaining to her. Unfortunately, her name is Legion.
