I use the word for any small mistake to avoid saying
to someone "You spelled that wrong" or "This isn't
right." Saying "Oops! Typo here," gives the
impression that natural processes somehow produced the
error independently of the writer. Slightly less
embarrassing, although they still don't like it.

How many in this group have had this experience?
You're walking at normal speed past someone's desk,
maybe even carrying on a conversation with somebody
else. A document is lying face-up, and
instantaneously, almost unconsciously, you look it
over and say "Typo!" before you can stop yourself.

This kind of thing can get writers disliked.
