Perhaps giving some examples would be helpful. I don't know what type
of data those users are likely to be transferring, but whatever it is,
they can probably comprehend relative sizes better in those terms than
in kilobytes:

"Transferring a simple one-page document would take up to _____
seconds..."

"A five-line email message can be transmitted in ___ to ___
seconds...."

"You may want to avoid sending anything larger than _____..."

I spend all day and most evenings in front of a computer, but to
figure out how much text equals 10KB, I had to go into Notepad and
type some gibberish, save, look in Explorer to check the file size,
repeat... in other words, I didn't have a clue how much 10KB was in
real terms.
