Not too long ago many participated in a thread and, I believe, a poll about whether or not techncal writing affected one's ability to write outside the field.

I am certain my profession has adversely affected my ability to read. I skim for "bulletted points" and "bold," until words like these stop me dead:

The rooom was large and low-ceilinged, the striped wallpaper faded to inoffensiveness. A huge dark wardrobe faced a huge dark bed. The rest of the furniture shrank away into corners, battered and apologetic.

Of course, in a few days I will have forgotten these sentences, because the book in which they appear will be just another book skimmed.
