I sent a request a couple of weeks ago for books that focus on the
development of technical documentation in the Software Development Life
Cycle. I promised that I would forward a list of titles that I find of
assistance.

The clear answer is that there is a real shortage of good material in this
field. Amongst the list of books mentioned by readers of this list, two
titles can be recommended:

Software Project Survival Guide, Steve C McConnell, Microsoft Press, 1998,
ISBN 1-57231-321-7
The Capability Maturity Model: Guidelines for improving the software
Process, Mark C Paulk and others, Carnegie Mellon University Software
Engineering Institute, 1996
Both of these books are focused on software development but contain useful
material on documentation.

A number of people posted links to books and material on the Document
Development Life Cycle. Although there are comparisons, it is not the same
thing!

A couple of days ago I happened upon the best of the bunch, an e-book by
Edward B Toupin. The book can be purchased online for $7 (US) and can be
obtained from the following site. The book (90 pages) is delivered in PDF
format with an additional zip file containing 16 (mostly) useful document
templates. The site is:
http://www.onlinebooksinc.com/NewFiles/edtoupin.html
You can view a section of the book for free, including the Table of
Contents.

I would be grateful if anyone can recommend other books or sources that may
be useful.
