Over the last couple of months, I've noticed two new trends in job-posting in the Vancouver area:

- on-line application forms: 14 months ago, these barely existed. Now, a growing number of companies are using them. I suspect that they are used to weed out casual applications, since they require more effort than an e-mail with an attachment. Also, answers on the form can be directly fed into a database, and the possibility of a virus in the attachment is eliminated.

- future reference applications: These listings make clear that the company isn't hiring now, but is interested in hearing from applicants for possible future openings. This trend is probably a response to the current recession, with employers hoping that the situation will get better in a few months (or possibly that they'll have a new budget after the next year end).

I was wondering: are these trends appearing elsewhere?

"And still they stand triumphant and immense,
The silent lines of marble monuments,
And soon the writhing seas will cease to writhe,
The specks of gray ash float to rest, and there will be
Perfect peace...complete calm...the maximum of - Order."
- Leon Rosselson, "The World Police"
