Don't know about doctors, but I know that research scientists are paid to
keep up on research! I used to work at the Department of Medical
Microbiology and Immunology at Ohio State University, and I saw the faculty
timesheets. There was always a chunk of time charged to the department (as
opposed to their various research projects) for reading journals or
attending conferences to "keep current".
