In belated justification of the discussion about Linux over the last couple of days, the latest survey from Evans Data Corporation notes the following:

- just under 40% of North American developers say that are they are like to do Linux development next year.

- 48% of non-North American developers expect to work with Linux next year, up from 33% last year.

- 50% of developers have enough confidence in Linux to use it in mission-critical operations

- The current economic conditions are making Linux especially attractive.

The point being, Linux is a technology that many people on this list may encounter in the next few years. Since you can easily get a free copy, or else a box set with installation support for under $50, it's a fairly painless thing to investigate

"But here's the latest phrase you hear as you walk down the street,
Oh, you can't be up-to-date if you don't call out when you meet,
'Are you working?' 'No, are you?'"
-British Music Hall Song, 1922
