I would add to the Investigate section of John's CIAO-R methodology
slightly.
When I am "investigating," I write down all questions, things that seem
awkward, out of place, etc. This is the time when I am the most naive user
of this particular product. I try to capture that experience and note all
the things that might be an impediment to usability or understanding. Later
when I have more information and start really writing, I pay special
attention to those notes.
