I won't take any job connected with the military. This is an active choice:

that it wouldn't matter how hungry/desperate I was: I've *been* that hungry
and that desperate and I won't do it.

I'm glad to hear someone else say this. Both privately and on the list, people have suggested that, faced with hunger (or children's hunger) that ethics will be forgotten. In many cases, these assertions may be right; no doubt they reflect the temper of the times. However, such naive cynicism ignores the fact that some people - a minority, probably - will inconvenience themselves for the sake of their beliefs. Far from giving in for the sake of their children, these people believe that they are setting their children an example - a claim that I have mixed feelings about, but which I think it important to acknowledge as part of the range of possible responses. Just because we don't live in idealistic times doesn't mean that there aren't some idealistic people around.

Humpty Dumpty was pushed: nobody noticed at all,
And all the king's horses and all the king's men
Gathered round Humpty and kicked him again;
And they called for a priest and a couple of friends,
And they all stood around and chanted, Amen."
