Al Friend asked:
I mean, I know how to turn it off in a given paragraph, but can you disable
autonumbering in the whole document, or better yet, the computer, forever?

Allen says:
Do this:

1. Choose AutoCorrect from the Tools menu. Word displays the AutoCorrect
dialog box.

2. Make sure the AutoFormat As You Type tab is selected.

3. Clear the Automatic Numbered Lists check box.

4. Click on OK.

That's it!
