|Are health records really routinely checked at hiring time?

Back in the dark ages, I worked in a factory where a full physical was required before hiring. I was asked questions such as whether I had menstrual cramps!

Today, most of these questions are prohibited by virtual of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Perhaps things are different in other countries, though.

Here in Alberta we have an animal called the "Feedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act" that places restrictions on access to your personal information held by public bodies like the provincial government, municipal governments, school boards, hospitals and the like.

In a nutshell, I couldn't go to one of these public bodies and get your personal information without your written consent.

I understand our federal government is also working on some legislation that would place restrictions on non-public bodies being able to share your personal information as well. A company I did some work for last year decided to be a bit proactive in this area--coming up with a corporate privacy code that attempts to anticipate many of the provisions of the federal legislation.
