Martin,
Others have made some great ideas about integrating with the engineers,
but I'm wondering if you can't also muster some sideways organizational
support as well. Rather than going through the engineers, is there a
product manager or account rep who could maneuver your involvement
informally? Either one of those folks has inroads with the customer, and
the product manager at least should have some kind of relationship with
engineering.

It's not clear from your post where exactly the resistance is coming
from. Maybe some more information would help.
