I was hired on technical prowess as well. The Program Manager understood my
background, knew that it involved extremely complicated and technical
concepts, and thought that if I could grasp those concepts, the current
industry should be a breeze. I expressed that I had used Word, and wasn't
afraid of it. That seemed to fit the bill. To this day, I haven't heard a
negative thing about my work.

Sometimes I think I was hired because I was a young unadulterated, malleable
mind, or at least so he thought. The great part is that he himself is an
established writer, but not in the position to write anymore. He is willing
to teach me things, and just as eager to learn.

Often, it is not about what you know, but what you have the ability to
understand and communicate. I am pretty sure Word could be taught to a
monkey...a really smart monkey at least. The organization of concepts,
ideas, and data is a little more difficult than the click and point "Make it
look nice" world of Word.

Long live the semicolon!
