Maybe it's the crowd I associate with outside of work, but when I tell people
I'm a technical writer, the reaction indicates that they don't really know what
my job is, but that it's rather mysterious and requires a lot of knowledge.
Bottom line - they think I'm smart, so who am I to argue? (It's a better
reaction that I got, previously, when I told people I was a high school English
teacher - they just thought I was obviously crazy.)

On the other hand, most engineers I know (with the wonderful exception of one
engineer I work with who told me, "Most people don't recognize the value of good
documentation.") seem to think technical writers are simply annoying. They fail
to see why we cause such a fuss when they make changes to an application and
don't tell us - or why we insist they schedule time in their development plan to
document the application before releasing it.

So, how are technical writers received? I really think it depends on who you
