I worked for a detective agency/surveillance equipment business whose
principal tired of teaching people and getting them licensed, only to have
them jump ship and go somewhere else for more money or start their own
agencies.

He got a lawyer friend to help him craft a non-compete, which folks eager to
become PIs would sign. Then he'd pay them low wages and work them like
slaves because they thought they couldn't work anywhere else.

Check with your friendly local attorney. Many non-competes won't hold up.
