This thread reminds me of a scene from the movie "Charly," in which the
main character (played by Cliff Robertson) is showing his mentor (Claire
Bloom) how his mind had been improving. He showed how to punctuate
a "that that" sentence:

that that is is that that is not is not is that it it is

Question: For all those grammar gurus, I have a question about the use of
"that that."
When is it used? What are the rules?

The oddest response that I can give to Benjamin is the punctuation quiz
from 30+ years ago... How do you punctuate

Johnny where the teacher had had had had had had had had had had had the
teachers approval

In the end, I try to avoid multiple uses of a word anywhere in a sentence,
let alone next to each other.

ANS: That that is, is. That that is not, is not. Is that it? It is.
"Charly." Ahh, jeez. Nothing like showing your age. <g> Back to work.
