Ben Weisner of Deva Associates asked me to post this for him.
(I guess he's not on the list any more...?)

While Deva Tools for Dreamweaver is a Dreamweaver extension (for
generating TOCs and indexes), Deva Search is a stand-alone client-side
Javascript search engine. We have clients that use Deva products with
their WWP output. It's true that you'd have to rebuild the search
index whenever the documentation changes, but that's a simple process
once the indexer is set up. If you have any questions you can email me
directly at benw -at- weisner -dot- com -dot- You can also download a free 30-day
evaluation from http://www.devahelp.com/downloads/eval.htm.

Regards--
