Thanks for all your help. In particular, Dick Margulis who directed me towards the font issue, and the Mac (that's the only machine here with AI9). For some reason, using "export to eps" on a Macintosh worked. Perhaps the Mac had the needed fonts installed. Oh well, on to the next emergency!
