You could certainly do it with WebWorks Publisher, and I'm guessing you
could do something similar with MIF2GO.

| Am I better off keeping my source in
| HTML, or should I be looking at XML (docbook, perhaps)?

If you want to use WWP, your source would be in Frame.

| I have plenty of scripting experience, have worked with JavaScript,
XSLT,

in a

The recommendation part is easy, but I don't see how you can come up to
speed on Frame and WWP or MIF2GO and put the entire architecture in
place within a week.

| A related question: if I format text using CSS in a web browser, and
cut &
| paste the text into Frame, will Frame pick up the styles by class
name,
| and apply the formatting defined in the template for each style?

Definitely not.
