Having spent the early part of my career plowing through official government documents or reports that would have earned scores in the 20s on anyone's Fog Index, I follow these rules:
Use the most precise word possible:
Correct: Sue Ahrenhold admonishes: <<Oh, come on, everybody!>>
Incorrect: Admonishment: Perilous declivity.

Use short sentences where possible:

Correct: The correct statement is "Use the right sentence length; don't artificially
shorten a sentence, nor allow a sentence to grow so long it collapses under
its own weight."
Incorrect: See any college term paper for far too many examples.

Geoff is right; I was oversimplifying.
