Let me try. Dick's original puzzle was (paraphrased):

If I reply off-list, I sometimes get an offended response.
If I reply on-list, I sometimes get an offended response.
Am I supposed to know in advance who will be offended an off-list reply and
who won't? How?

As far as I can tell, at least half the replies to this post addressed
something other than what he asked. It was an essentially rhetorical
question, accompanied by what I saw as a puzzled look and some head
scratching. And my answer is no, Dick, you're not supposed to know in
advance. I can't explain it either :)
