TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Excellent point! Unless you work for a humongous company with a gigantic
documentation staff (like 50+ people, minimally) it really doesn't make
any sense to use a CMS separate from your development team. At minimum,
your developers' revision control system will give you check in/out and
lock capabilities, which is more than adequate for the immediate need.
Then, if you find the system's working but needs to expand, you can then
petition the PHBs for either customizations in your view of the system
or for a new system for documentation/writing (you can pool training,
marketing, sales, etc. into this as well, seeing as they'd benefit from
such a system too).

::: Certainly if you're in a software shop, and possibly in any field,
::: your first question should be to ask what your developers use for
::: revision control on product design.
::: If they do have a system in place, that immediately becomes the
::: leading candidate for use in the docs dep't, and you'd need a
::: really good reason to use anything else.
