Evan Martin wonders if <<...someone can help me with Word and numbered lists
in Master/Sub documents. Numbered lists don't seem to want to hold their
formatting.>>

I can make things very easy for you, but you won't like the answer: Don't
use either. Master documents are a well-known recipe for disaster in Word
(they still don't work after many releases of Word including this feature);
numbered lists are less sinister, but also don't work and become frustrating
to keep them working properly. Check the techwr-l archives for endless
discussions over the years on just why this is.

Solutions? Check the archives for references to fixes for the autonumbering
bug (using SEQ fields) and for discussions of using "reference document"
(RD) fields in a separate file that serves the same role as a Master
document--but that works without corrupting your files.
