The recent criticism of the INTERCOM article reminded me of another
thing I've noticed about a number of their articles, and I was wondering
if anyone else has noticed it. They seem to assume that the reader is a
totally autonomous being who an do whatever he/she pleases with
documentation or at his/her place of employment.
One example is in the most recent issue -- the article on marcom
writing, which kind of makes it sound like you can just take a notion to
breeze on over to the advertising department and work there for awhile.
Another was an article on using various types of rhetoric in your
documentation. This assumes you can just do your own thing with the
documentation and never mind your company's style guide.
