I'd call it "marketing tactic." Its like Microsoft giving away IE for free. They
did it just to smash the competition. Its the same with anybody who hands out
software for free. The hope is people will use it, like it, and buy it. Handing
it to profs and students isn't fundamentally different from the crack dealers
giving you the first hit for free. Once you get hooked, you won't consider any
alternatives.

Entire industries have been built on this rather lame, but effective marketing
premise. Its why I pitch inexpensive security audits to customers. Its an easy
way to get my foot in the door and hooked on my services.
