Sean Hower informed us: "Hi all: I know that several of you have been asking about how to set fees for freelance writing. The latest issue of Writer's Digest has an article on this topic. I haven't read it yet, because I misplaced my issue, so I don't know how good it is

Just FYI."

********************************************
Over the years I have sold a few articles to magazines and "set fees" were never a part of it.

I would query the editor with an idea or the editor would contact me with a request and we negotiated. How long? When is it due? Which rights are being sold? and How much money? When will the check be delivered?, and othe issues were all discussed and agreed upon.

The key issue is to send a letter or e-mail summarizing the negotiation results and asking them to sign and return or inform you if your summary is in error. Keep a copy of your letter/e-mail. It will stand as a contractual agreement if a dispute arises later (even if they do not respond) -- or, at the very least, will show the intent of each party when the agreement was reached and work began.

In the web content arena, the process is similar except the letter part. Negotiate your price and delivereables. Don't be afraid to ask for more compensation and don't agree to sell "All Rights" for less than a princely sum.
