Actually, all these things are important factors in what you're doing. You wouldn't be the first person to be given a difficult or nearly impossible task.

To give you a personal example,I once worked at a short contract where I realized that the point wasn't any technical writing that I produced, but the five page analysis I gave at the end of the contract about the poor existing documentation in the company.Basically, the manager who hired me didn't care if I managed to produce any documents - the fact that I did was an unexpected bonus.

Of course, you may have thought about these things. However, all those on the list know is what you write.

Besides, given that single sourcing and central repositories of knowledge are hardly new, commenting on seemingly peripheral issues isn't as irrelevant as you might initially think.I don't know about anyone else, but, in my experience, human factors have as much to do - if not more - with the success of such efforts. So, stressing them seems appropriate.

Finally, don't forget that many posts to this list include a meta-discussion; they aren't just talking about the particular problem someone mentions, but also about the larger issues surrounding the problem. In other words, replies may be addressed not only to you, but also to the lurkers on the list who may be interested in similar subjects. And, to judge from the replies off-list that I often get, many of them are.
