To put the fields in perspective (at least from the DC Metro area POV):
Tech Writer mid-level starting salary is around $45,000-$52,000 in IT.
Manual QA (with no programming or automated testing experience) mid-level starting salary is around $48,000-$58,000 in IT.
Mid-level QA with automated testing and scripting background starts at around $57,000.

Hope this helps,

KW
