Nayanika...

This is not correct and you do a disservice to those technical writers who
are VERY GOOD and specialize in a particular area. Does this mean that if I
do only proposals but wouldn't know how to do an installation manual if my
goldfish's life depended on it, then I'm not a "technical writer"?

Why is it important to qualify what we do if we want to be considered a
technical writer? I prefer the definition similar to the Supreme Court
Justice, who when asked if he could define pornography...said "I cannot
define it, but I know it when I see it."

If you are a technical writer, you know it. If you aren't sure if you are
one or not, then you aren't.

the following and more to constantly add value:
1) Write
a) end-user documentation like
- User Manuals
- Quick Ref Guides
- Installation Manuals
b) Marketing Collateral like
- Proposals
- Response to RFPs and RFIs
