I don't disagree with Geoff very often, but--in a book--I think it's still OK to introduce an idea in detail then assume an increasing familiarity later references. On paper, you would be sure to include Increase and Decrease in the glossary; in PDF, you could even link occurrences of those terms directly to the glossary entries.

In help, of course, I'd just use the in-line graphics.
