Bruce Byfield suggested spending some money that new
and aspiring tech writers might otherwise spend on
classes instead to buy the tools they might need.

True enough, I suppose, but there are other things
many do not know.

For instance, there are demo CDs around from Adobe
that will install the full applications with limited
output--and they cost nothing.

For example, their FrameMaker demo prints a watermark
on output pages--but is otherwise identical to the
full program (although I don't know if they have the
demo disks for Frame 7 out yet).

This should cover FrameMaker, Illustrator and
Photoshop, as well as several others.

One very sophisticated and popular tool should be
cheap enough to buy directly, and evaluation copies
are downloadable. That is Snagit, arguably the best of
all the screen capture tools--and they happen to
advertise to help support this list.

Best of luck,

David
