Breaking into the tech writing field by starting your own business is a
very risky endeavor. I personally think you should look for full-time
work and determine if the field, to you, is indeed worth the amount of
money and overhead in running your own consulting shop.

Joining the STC can't hurt. It's a small drop in the bucket money-wise,
so you should give it a go and see if you like it yourself. Some people
unconditionally love it, some unconditionally hate it, and many others
(like myself) are somewhere in between. Your best bet is to join for a
yeaqr and determine its worth for yourself.

My advice to you is to hold off on the home business for now and
determine if you really like the profession - and what about the
profession you like. If you have the time, look for a job with a
consulting group (not an agency) that provides technical writing
services... That's what I did. I worked on many different types of
projects in a very short period of time, and was able to determine what
about tech writing I enjoyed most from that experience. It was very
worth while.
