clever, linguistic sentences that I don't understand the purpose of, for
which.

I agree with your observations. But, for long-lived products like Word
and FrameMaker, and given the market at least for FrameMaker, you would
think they could get it done. I would anyway. That's not to say I think
poorly of the FrameMaker doc set. I don't. I think the FM7 doc is
improved over the FM6 and 5 doc sets and I hope the trend will continue.

You actually bring up a point that I strongly agree with. Most user
documentation raises the question as to whether the authors have
actually used
the software in a production environment. But then again, is that a
realistic
demand to place on the writers? Perhaps it is something that could be
demanded
of a mature product such as FrameMaker or Word, but it is an impossible
task for
writers of documentation for new software.
Trying to keep ahead of advanced users who may be using the product to
levels
and tasks never considered suring the design or production of the
software is an
impossible task. At that point, I think what is required much more
indepth
documentation about how the software functions to allow the advaced
users to
come up with their own processes in an informed manner instead of
finding things
out 'hit and miss'.
