Sorry if this has already been mentioned (I fell behind reading the digests and I haven't the time right now to catch up :) ...

...but there is a web-based dialect survey conducted by Dr. Bert Vaux at Harvard. It is long (about 240+ questions) but it is fun to participate. One of the questions concerns the pronunciation of new-clear vs. nu-cue-lar, there is also a question about the term you use to describe a carbonated beverage (pop vs. soda). The coolest thing about this survey is that the responses are plotted over a map of the US. There are very clear regional differences for many of the questions (e.g. pop vs. soda vs. coke). Unfortunately, due to their recent publicity, their servers have been overwhelmed and the map function is down

So it really isn't about the "right" way to say something or an indication of how smart you are (as posited here by a few people) — it's about where you grew up and where you live. I may say new-cue-lar and call carbonated beverages soda but at least I don't use the Michigander vernacular with beauts like, "I seen him at the store today," "Get me them beers over there," and my favorite, "no, you mayn't do that." :-)

Cheers,
Tony
