We took a simple approach to this problem, using PowerPoint.

In one case, we built a basic presentation. Then, for each slide, we did
a set of deeper presentations and put links to them on the basic slides.
For a couple of slides we did two levels of deeper presentations.

In another case, where the presenters wanted total flexibility, we gave
them a list of the slides and they used the keyboard number commands to
sequence them on the fly. It turned out to be not that difficult. After
showing the presentation a few times, they had it half memorized anyway.
