How many people are content with being a technical writer? Do people see themselves as being tech-writers for the rest of their working lives? Or do they hope to move into another field or into management? If they do plan to move away from technical writing, what do they plan to do next? Ultimately?

Getting disillusioned and burned out as well. I think I'd enjoy managing a tech writing team, but as more and more companies downsize or outsource their tech pubs departments, the number of management jobs likewise dwindles.

My next gig? Police Officer. Yep. Just completed the first two steps of the process, and should be in the March '03 cadet class. I'm tired of doing a job that many don't regard as important (and Andrew I'm tired of tirelessly persuading others of it's importance), and where the stability is zilch. Besides, the two things I've always wanted to be were a writer and a police officer. I've been the former. Time to try the later. Maybe my final gig will combine the two (hello Mickey Spillane)
