How many people are content with being a technical writer? Do people see themselves as being tech-writers for the rest of their working lives? Or do they hope to move into another field or into management? If they do plan to move away from technical writing, what do they plan to do next? Ultimately?

I love what I do. I can't imagine doing anything else. I work as a lone tech writer, helping a team of developers and scientists to create programs that could literally change our lives. (Most of what we do is hush/hush, but believe me...we are on the verge of changing medicine. Check out some of our published work at http://www.rii.com/)

I've done other things in my life. I have worked in a variety of factories (even inspected sanitary napkins one summer), been a secretary, and spent 15 years teaching college. I am happiest when I can help someone figure out what their system is supposed to do, then write it up so someone else understands it. (I spend a lot of time saying, "That database is great, but what do you expect will happen when you click on the icon?").

I have been a project manager, but never officially had the name. I have supervised a very small document team (one junior tech writer and me). At my current company, I get a lot of respect. Again, I love what I do. And last night, I signed a paper that says I will be working (or at least making house payments) until two weeks before my 80th birthday...
