I think you can answer the question without it being a
deep, soul-searching issue. Sometime during last
year's perpetual job search, I decided that there is
no reason to take this as a personal question.

When they ask me what my strengths are, I talk about
my skills (I write very very well), so why should my
weakness be a character flaw? So, I'd say "I really
could use more work on <some technology I wish I knew
more about>" and that successfully diverted the
conversation back into professional terms.

It may not be what they think they were asking, but
it's an honest and thoughtful answer.
