I agree completely and have seen it here. There is a confusion with the role of the Technical Writer versus the Documentation Specialist or Document Clerk. At another job, I learned the Documentation Specialist basically assisted the Technical Writer. Here, the Documentation Specialist AND the Clerks are doing the same thing I am doing. I am the only one who has chosen to go out to the shop, take pictures and write the tool assembly procedures from blueprints with the Engineer. I have had other Technical Writers ask me why I do that and I have had to explain that I thought it was the best way to learn the tools. Their response: "You don't have to know the tool, the Engineer does that." "We just put their stuff in XML and edit it." The Engineers, however, seem to be very appreciative of someone out there with them that can free them from writing and allow them to do Engineering.
