According to Six Feet Under, you are supposed to put a lemon wedge between your teeth to arouse you when you pass out. It sounds like these kids were missing the full instructions of what they were attempting.

That's a very scary word. Several years ago, a classmate of my sons
accidentally killed himself trying this. His parents found out when he
failed to go on his paper route in the morning.
