Actually John, I have.

It was on a web page and illustrated the operation of a centrifugal pump.

Though I'll admit that I personally wouldn't waste the time to set an animation like that up, I'd just make up a drawing.

I also agree that except in this particular case, animated gifs are one of the most annoying things on the face of the planet.

seen an animated gif that communicated something technical?
