Word Generated TOC Problem

Is there some way once you generate a TOC to:

1. remove the shading

2. Cut and paste the generated TOC into another file
and have it print without gernerating the 'error
cannot find bookmark' message???

I thought in those long ago versions of Word you could
do this without loosing the TOC format......
