I realize this does not speak to the initial problem posed, but. . . I've
used side heads in FrameMaker for user manuals quite successfully. The side
heads contain just the key words for the power users who need a quick
reminder, while the full procedure is written out in the larger, right-hand
column. This approach has been well received by our target audience (which
covers technicians, new users, experienced users, administrators and even
the engineers themselves).
