When I've attempted that solution in the past, Word has frequently taken it upon itself to decide that I MUST be creating a numbered list and therefore taken control of the numbering, in its own inimitable style. This has occurred regardless of what I had unchecked on the options tab, with those setting mysteriously changing under control of the MS homunculus, too.

I'm glad you were lucky enough to make the technique work, if it was luck. If it was skill and knowledge, please share ;-)
